Playing Time Guidelines

Updated Thursday October 6, 2016 by Rye Brook Youth Soccer.

Rye Brook Youth Soccer is a competitive travel club within the WYSL (Westchester Youth Soccer League).  Unlike intramural sports, U11 and above are placed in various WYSL divisions in which weekly scores are recorded and team standings are maintained.  Although we have always made it a priority to include players of various levels and abilities, it is equally important that our teams are able to successfully compete within the league.  This means that individual players will receive significantly more playing time based on skill level, particularly at the older levels.  (Likewise, less dominant players should expect to have fewer opportunities during games.). This strategy is not only necessary for teams to consistently perform at their highest level, but follows the general practices of competitive travel sports programs throughout the country.

1)      U8 - U9 - U10

At these earlier ages the emphasis is on player development and sportsmanship. Each player can expect to receive a meaningful amount of playing time each game, as well as the opportunity to play different positions on the field.  We define a meaningful amount of playing time as around half a game.  Skill, behavior, effort, ability, attitude, sportsmanship and knowledge of the game will all be taken into consideration by the Coaches in determining the level of playing time above the minimum, as well as the need to respond to live game-time situations.

2) U11 - U12

At this age, scores are recorded and league standing are maintained. It becomes a more competitive experience, although there still remains a focus on player development and sportsmanship.  All players can expect to receive guaranteed playing time in each half (with a minimum of 10 minutes a game).  Once gain, skill, behavior, effort, ability, attitude, sportsmanship and knowledge of the game will all be taken into consideration by the Coaches in determining the level of playing time above the minimum, as well as the need to respond to live game-time situations.

3) U13 - U18

Full Coaches discretion: From U13, the competitive aspect of the program increases further and the Coaches have complete discretion with regards to playing time.  Skill, behavior, effort, ability, attitude, sportsmanship and knowledge of the game will all be taken into consideration by the Coaches in determining the level of playing time, as well as the need to respond to live game-time situations.

Attendance may also be taken into consideration across all age groups when factoring in playing time.
